The School Division
About Us
Pembina Hills School Division delivers educational services to the municipalities of Swan Hills,
Woodlands County, County of Barrhead, Town of Barrhead, Westlock County, Town of
Westlock, Village of Clyde, the south eastern portion of M.D. of Big Lakes and the southern
portion of the M.D. of Lesser Slave River.
Public school services are provided through twenty schools. Two of these are Hutterite Colonies
while another school offers an alternate public program focusing on a non-denominational
Christian education. Pembina Hills also has established Outreach and Virtual School programs.
Pembina Hills Regional Division No. 7 has a long history of outstanding education along with a
strong sense of community. We are proud of the welcoming atmosphere that exists at our
schools. This creates a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable and safe
and parents are encouraged to get involved.
Through a Service Agreement with Alberta Education, PHRD is also responsible for the Alberta
Distance Learning Centre (ADLC). Based in Barrhead, with regional offices in Calgary,
Edmonton, and Lethbridge, ADLC offers core and complementary courses, as well as
Francophone and French Immersion programs, outlined in Alberta Education’s programs of
study. ADLC provides 21
st
Century Learning opportunities in print, online, and blended formats
for Grades 1
12 students and adult learners across Alberta.

“Together We Learn”
Mandate
Pembina Hills School Division shall deliver an education program consistent with the Alberta
School Act.
Purpose
Our purpose is to ensure the delivery of an excellent education to our students so they become
good citizens who contribute to society.
Our Goals
PHRD’s Education Plan Goals align to those of the province:
1. An Excellent Start to Learning
2. Success for Every Student
3. Quality Teaching and School Leadership
4. Engaged and Effective Governance
The Board’s Priorities for
2013-2016 are a continuation of the Priorities from the previous year
and are as follows:
The Engaged Learner
-
This central focus captures the Board’s intent that all participants
in the education system need to become Engaged Learners. The students will be
engaged when their teachers, administration, and parents demonstrate commitment to
learning. This concept is central to the Board’s motto; “Together
We
Learn”.
Success for ALL Students
-
This priority captures the desire of the Board that all students
achieve success relevant to their grade level, ability and individual needs. Under this
priority the Board envisioned strategies to support learners in the inclusive learning
environment of our rural schools.
Universal Design for Learning and Differentiated Instruction -
This priority recognizes
the value and importance of designing instruction and assessment in ways that are
accessible to EVERY child. Under this priority the Board envisioned strategies that
would enhance educators’ capacities to design and deliver
instruction.
